Training as an earthquake seismologist “dovetails quite nicely” with managing investments, according to Charlie Wilson, portfolio co-manager of the Thornburg Developing World fund.

Financial markets and earth sciences have similarities, he says: They are interdisciplinary, complex systems where researchers create hypotheses using incomplete data sets. “Applying that in a market environment is very helpful because there are a lot of things we can’t know, but we need to be comfortable in making forecasts and making decisions that lead to investments,” he says.
