Trying to give back to the FDNY

I’m standing in a midtown firehouse a few weeks ago watching – over a two-hour period – the guys suit up and answer six different calls. Last week, in a different midtown house, it was three calls in 45 minutes. Yet the guys (yes, in these particular houses and during these shifts it was all “guys”) never stopped smiling…never griped…and worked as cohesive teams.
“We’re family,” one of them said to me. “This is what we do.”
Helping the FDNY, through the FDNY Foundation, has been an honor for me over the past 12 years. Watching our firefighters work on, and in the weeks after, 9/11 is something my family and I will never forget. The stories below focus on our work – and that of other Board members and their companies — for the Foundation, and how one company (JetBlue) has taken its support to a new height.

The training our firefighters receive is paying off in a different way as well. Employers are realizing those very firefighters aren’t just good at fighting fires. The CBS clip below by Peter Greenberg shows how firefighters are doing an amazing job…as JetBlue flight attendants.
